How Red Bull can win the 2022 Constructors' Championship in the US Grand Prix

Red Bull are all set to win the 2022 Constructors' Championship - but what do they need to do to secure it at the United States Grand Prix?

The House of Mercedes has finally been breached as Red Bull are set to claim the 2022 Formula 1 Constructors' Championship. After eight years, the Mercedes star will be replaced by either the Red Bull emblem or Ferrari's Prancing Horse - but it is a long shot for the Scuderia. They have failed to capitalise on their strong early season form and through a variety of strategic, operational and driver blunders will not claim a first title of any kind since 2008. Instead, Red Bull will complete the championship double - and move onto five Constructors' crowns. Only Ferrari (16), Williams (nine), McLaren and Mercedes (eight) and Lotus (seven) have won more - but what exactly do Red Bull need to take the crown in Austin?

Constructors' Championship permutations

Put very simply, if Red Bull win the United States Grand Prix - they will be the 2022 champions. As it stands, prior to the weekend, there are 191 points left up for grabs across the remaining four races and the sprint race in Brazil. Red Bull currently enjoy a 165 point lead (619 vs 454) over Ferrari, with the gap needing to be 147 points after the race to crack out the champagne for the Milton Keynes squad. It means Red Bull only needs to out-score Ferrari by 18 points to take the title. Should Max Verstappen or Sergio Perez take the win on Sunday, it means Ferrari's best possible haul would be 34 points (second+third+fastest lap). In such a scenario, they would only out-score Red Bull by a maximum of nine (should the second one not score points). Alternatively, a third and fourth for Red Bull behind a maximum haul of 44 for Ferrari would also be good enough with the Scuderia set to lose out on any potential tie-breaker as Red Bull have more wins in the season.
