Lewis Hamilton has praised the impact that James Allison has had on Mercedes since his return to the Technical Director role.

After a disappointing start to the season - with Hamilton claiming only one podium for the team in Australia and a gulf in performance remaining to Red Bull - Allison switched roles with Mike Elliott.

The move saw Allison return as Technical Director just 20 months after having initially handed over the role to Elliott before becoming Chief Technical Officer.

The job swap allows Allison to take a more hands-on role in overseeing the production and development of F1 machinery.

He knows when to be stern

Allison's return to the role coincided with a major upgrade package that saw Mercedes take the initiative in the battle for second in the Constructors' standings, overtaking Aston Martin.

"[Updates] are in the pipeline for many races to come. It takes time to build things," Hamilton told media, including RacingNews365.

"James is great, we've got a really good relationship, and he knows when to be stern - he's probably never actually soft, to be honest!

"We had a great meeting [before the Hungarian Grand Prix] where we had all the heads of departments within the room, and just making sure we're all on the same page, great communication.

"We have 100 per cent faith in them, and just as a group, as a whole, that we will get to where we need to be."
