Lewis Hamilton was knocked out of qualifying for Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix in Q1, and will start 18th.
The Mercedes driver ran wide at Turn 14 on his final lap, and failed to make the cut by less than a tenth of a second.
It came off the back of a strong performance in the sprint race earlier in the day, where he finished in second place, behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen, having led for nine laps.
Home hero Zhou Guanyu was also knocked out in Q1 - he will start his first home grand prix in 16th.
Logan Sargeant continued his disappointing qualifying run, having failed to beat team-mate Alex Albon since his F1 debut at the start of last season, with a spin on his final lap bringing out yellow flags. He will start last.
Those three are joined by Kevin Magnussen and Yuki Tsunoda, who also failed to get out of Q1 in sprint qualifying.
