Hamilton hit with penalty for incident ahead of first-lap chaos

Lewis Hamilton was issued a five-second time penalty during the Qatar Grand Prix for jumping the start. The seven-time world champion has been enduring a difficult event around the Lusail International Circuit and was disappointed with his qualifying result on Saturday. His day went from bad to worse at the start of the grand prix when he jumped the start. Hamilton moved slightly in his grid box before coming to a stop right as the lights went out - he recovered but lost momentum and positions as a result. He was punished further as the stewards deemed it necessary to issue him a five-second time penalty.

Colapinto, Ocon instantly eliminated from Qatar GP

Shortly after Hamilton's jump start, the F1 field was reduced to 18 cars when Esteban Ocon and Franco Colapinto crashed out. The pair were hit by Haas' Nico Hulkenberg as they turned into the first corner with the German driver losing grip on his hard tyres. It marked yet another incident for Williams - however the damage on this occasion was minimal compared to the catastrophes of the late. The stewards looked into the incident but did not issue any penalty for the collision.
