Haas punished for dramatic pit lane Sprint Shootout incident

Nico Hulkenberg's Haas car was flung into the air after a collision with a removed wheel.

The Haas team have received a fine for the incident which saw Nico Hulkenberg's car jump off the ground in the pit lane. During the Sprint Shootout - which resulted in Nico Hulkenberg claim an impressive fourth place - the number 27 car made a pit stop for fresh tyres during the quickfire qualifying session. When leaving his pit box, the new rear-left wheel of Hulkenberg's car made contact with the recently-removed front-left wheel, which was being held by a Haas mechanic. The contact sent the Haas car partly airborne, and landed just outside the Haas pit box, but it is believed no mechanic was injured by the collision. Hulkenberg continued in the session, but the Stewards reviewed the incident after the conclusion of the Sprint Shootout. The Stewards decided to fine the Haas team $5,000, with the fine suspended until the end of the season "on condition there is no further breach of Article 34.14a by the team". No grid penalty was handed out, and therefore Hulkenberg keeps his P4 position on the grid for the Sprint.
