George Russell broke down in the Monaco Grand Prix tunnel during qualifying to trigger a second Mercedes red flag. With just over 10 minutes of Q2 remaining, Russell reported a loss of power halfway up the hill to Massanet, but ground to a halt through the tunnel, before the right-hander. Mercedes reported that he had hit a bump through Turn 1 and was unable to restart the car despite advice from engineer Marcus Dudley. It is believed at this early stage to be an electrical problem aboard the W16. Russell was wheeled through the rest of the tunnel to the Nouvelle chicane and taken down the run-off. It was the second red flag for the team after Kimi Antonelli crashed at the chicane at the end of Q1. It means Russell will start 14th and Antonelli at 15th, with potential penalties for other drivers, such as Lewis Hamilton, for an investigation into impeding Max Verstappen in Q1.
