George Russell has declared he feels ready to fight for the F1 championship, suggesting his display at the Singapore Grand Prix was proof of his maturity.
Russell's weekend around the Marina Bay Circuit started in disaster with a crash during Friday practice.
However, the Mercedes driver bounced back on Saturday with a strong run to pole position before dominating en route to his fifth career victory.
While it marked a turnaround for Russell following his shunt in practice, the strong result also offered redemption for the Briton who suffered a heartbreaking last-lap crash in Singapore in 2023 as he chased a race win.
“This track has not been my best friend over the years, and that’s often been through my own doing,” Russell acknowledged, speaking to media including RacingNews365.
“But I’m a very different driver today to the one I was a couple of years ago, and I feel more complete, more confident. I know exactly what I need to do in given circumstances.
“Of course, I was nervous before the race as you’d expect, but I didn’t feel any additional nerves or any additional pressure.
“It just felt like another race, and I knew I had a chance to win, and I felt comfortable with that.”
Russell's statement comes as he waits to sign a deal with Mercedes for 2026.
RacingNews365 has previously reported Russell has rejected several offers as he seeks better terms.
With paddock rumblings suggesting Mercedes could start the sport's new era in 2026 on the front foot, Russell has backed himself to bring home a title should the opportunity present itself.
“So, you know, I’ve said it for a while - I feel ready to fight for a championship,” he said.
“I feel ready to take it to my next step.”
