Gasly adds to qualifying chaos on day to forget

The Alpine driver crashed out of qualifying with an error at Turn 3 and will join Nyck de Vries at the back of the grid for Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Pierre Gasly added to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying chaos by crashing out of qualifying in Q1. The Frenchman was lucky to have even taken part in the session after his Alpine mechanics rushed to repair damage from a fire during practice. But having only set the 18th fastest time with eight minutes remaining in the first session of qualifying, Gasly made an error into Turn 3, obliterating the Tecpro barriers on exit and damaging the right-hand side of his A523 and triggering the second red flag period. Reacting over team radio, Gasly said: "I'm sorry, I locked the fronts." The incident came at the same corner as Nyck de Vries had crashed out of the session, causing the first red flag delay. Meanwhile, behind Gasly, Carlos Sainz - who with just over seven minutes left on the clock was yet to set a time - escaped without damage after spinning at Turn 1.
