Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds has shut down the possibility of Barcelona being added to the 2027 calendar, but has not ruled it out for 2028 and beyond.
German outlet e-formel.de reported that a race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya could be on the cards for April next year. However, Dodds has dismissed that possibility.
Discussions with teams over a potential race in Barcelona have recently taken place, while talks between Formula E and the circuit have also been held.
Despite receiving positive responses from all parties, Formula E's CEO has ruled out racing on Spain's north-east coast during the opening season of the Gen4 era.
Barcelona is viewed as an attractive destination by Formula E, which has left the door open to it featuring on the calendar in 2028, the second season of Gen4.
Formula E already races in the Spanish capital, Madrid, where its debut event earlier this year was a huge success. Jarama will return next June as a double-header.
Next year is set to be a particularly difficult one for Barcelona, with the circuit not due to host a Formula 1 grand prix. Under its rotational agreement, it is currently scheduled to feature in 2028, 2030 and 2032.
"We have had conversations with Barcelona," Dodds confirmed to select media during a roundtable. "I think I can say, categorically, and I might be surprised here — there's a 1% chance of that — but Barcelona won't make its way onto the calendar for next season.
"The calendar is pretty much locked down. We know that we've just announced a slight date change in Monaco to accommodate a request from the venue, but Barcelona won't be on the schedule next year. That doesn't mean it won't be on the schedule beyond next year, though.
"Whether that means it goes on alongside Madrid or on a rotational basis with Madrid, who knows? But I think we're excited by the prospect of the venue because we think it would be an interesting addition.
"Equally, Madrid put on such a great show for us this year that we would be very reluctant not to be racing there for the foreseeable future."
