Formula E set for ultimate final day title showdown thriller

Today is the final day of the Formula E season, and it is one that marks the end of several eras in the all-electric series. However, there are also two world titles to be settled.

The ultimate final-day title showdown has been set up at Formula E's London E-Prix, with chaos, controversy and plenty of emotion all but guaranteed.

But, as mentioned, it is a day of eras ending. It is the final day of the Gen3 regulatory cycle, the final Formula E race at London's ExCeL Centre and likely the final race of both Lucas di Grassi's and Sébastien Buemi's careers in the category.

And on top of it all, there is the small matter of two world titles to be settled, with next to no points separating the contenders.

The teams' title is a straight fight between rivals Jaguar and Porsche, the two factory outfits that have dominated the Gen3 era. It is the Big Cat that holds a five-point lead over the Germans, but with 47 points up for grabs, it is not a comfortable margin.

Three points are awarded for pole, one for the fastest lap in the race, 25 for the winner and 18 for second. That brings the grand total to 47. Porsche just needs to score five more. Crucially, if the teams finish level, both sit on four wins, but Jaguar have more second-place finishes.

And then there is the drivers' title, a three-way fight for the world championship. Pascal Wehrlein, after claiming pole and victory on Saturday, has a five-point lead over rival Jake Dennis. Both are already Formula E world champions.

The absolute outsider is Mitch Evans, who enters his final race as a Jaguar driver after a decade with the team, 21 points behind. Evans needs a miracle, but that is something that has happened in London before. Evans has never won the world title.

In Dennis' case, a race win feels necessary. If the Briton and Wehrlein end the season level on points, the latter would win the title due to having three wins to Dennis' two. If they finish level and Dennis wins the race, the Andretti star would win the title due to having more second-place finishes.

It is the finest of margins in one of the closest championships in the world, and all three know what is at stake.

Pascal Wehrlein - 169 points

Asked if entering the final day as the title leader is what he lives for as a driver, Wehrlein told RacingNews365: "In a way, you dream to be in that position, and you're working really hard the whole year together with the team to arrive at the last race and be in the fight for that championship. 

"It makes it all worth it because, believe me, there are also some days where you think, yeah, it's quite tough. But also some weekends where you're down, obviously, where nothing is coming together. So, yeah, we are hungry. We are motivated. 

"Right now, we are on the good end, and we try everything to get it done."

Jake Dennis - 164 points

"It would mean a lot," Dennis told RacingNews365. "You know, we sacrifice a hell of a lot to put ourselves in this position. 

"But it's just more of, I think, a reward for the team to really turn it around over the past two seasons, where we've been nowhere, and to finish this generation of car as champion is incredible. 

"Honestly, even if we finish second, it's a huge thing for a customer team to be this close to the manufacturers and something we should be proud of."

Mitch Evans - 148

For Evans, there is also the aim of ending a decade with Jaguar on a high, saying to RacingNews365: "Yeah, I mean, that'd be amazing. My high is obviously a championship, but if we can't do that, at least try and get the teams' [championship] or something. 

"So, yeah, we'll just go out and kind of leave with no regrets, and hopefully, hopefully, just have a positive day and end on a high, whatever that high is. Let's see, but it's a weird feeling. It'll be nice enough if we can manage that. So I'm trying all I can to try and achieve that."
