The latest news from the world of Formula 1 and the 2020 season. Formula 1 went through an unprecedented season in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc across the world. Initially slated to start in March, the start of the campaign was pushed back to July with significant changes to the calendar - with 17 races on it.

Valtteri Bottas crossed the line first at the season opening, a sign of things to come as Mercedes dominated once again by claiming 13 victories. A big reason for that was the form of Lewis Hamilton who won 11 races, clinching his seventh Driver’s Championship at the Turkish Grand Prix to move level with the legendary Michael Schumacher for most titles. The Brit also broke another record held by the German, winning his 92nd race at the Portuguese Grand Prix to sit alone atop the list of most wins.

While Hamilton and Bottas’ success pushed Mercedes to yet another Constructors’ Championship, making them the only team to win seven consecutive titles, there was still ample action elsewhere on the grid. Max Verstappen won two races, helping Red Bull finish second behind Mercedes despite the inconsistent form of Alexander Albon. The 24-year-old never looked like challenging his more illustrious Dutch teammate, with Verstappen out-qualifying Albon at every event. As a result Red Bull have opted to bring in Sergio Perez as Albons’s replacement in 2021.

McLaren continued their move towards the front of the grid finishing third ahead of Racing Point and Renault. The Woking team only finished on the podium twice compared to Racing Point’s four and Renault’s three, however their consistency over the course of the year was enough to make them the best of the rest after Mercedes and Red Bull.

Racing Point, who will go by Aston Martin in 2021, saw Sergio Perez win his first career race at the Sakhir Grand Prix after 190 starts, while Renault saw both Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon finish on the podium, with the Australian’s third place finish at the Eifel Grand Prix the team’s best result since the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix. They will be rebranded as Alpine in 2021.

Ferrari slumped to their worst finish since 1980, finishing sixth despite landing on the podium three times. The Scuderia looked off the pace for much of the season and failed to register a pole position or win as their power unit struggled to keep up with their rivals. Prior to the season they announced 2020 would be Sebastian Vettel’s last with the team, as Carlo Sainz will join Charles Leclerc in 2021 as the team kickstarts their rebuild.

AlphaTauri registered their first win thanks to Pierre Gasly at the Italian Grand Prix, a result that helped them distance themselves from the bottom three of the grid. Both Alfa Romeo and Haas took a step back as their underpowered Ferrari power units limited them to a combined 11 points, while Williams was the only team that failed to register a point as Sir Frank Williams and Claire Williams said goodbye with the team now owned by Dorilton Capital.
