Fernando Alonso has retired from the Italian Grand Prix after an "unbelievable" suspension failure.
The Aston Martin veteran had been running in the points until he pitted at the same time as Gabriel Bortoleto in front, and emerged ahead after quick pit work by the crew.
Running 15th after the stops with cars ahead yet to stop, Alonso exited the Ascari chicane, but as he ran over the exit kerbs, the right-front suspension of his AMR25 failed.
In a shower of sparks, Alonso slowed and crawled back to the pits, calling the failure "unbelievable."
It is Alonso's sixth DNF in the turbo hybrid era at Monza, following 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.
Team-mate Lance Stroll is running ninth, having not yet made his pit-stop, as of Lap 31 of 53.
