F3 race cancelled as F1 Belgian GP coming under increased threat

The support race series was cancelled at Spa as heavy rain battered the circuit.

The FIA Formula 3 feature race has been cancelled at the Belgian Grand Prix, with the F1 race coming under threat.

Severe rain is currently battering Spa with no sign of it letting up throughout the day as the 30 cars of the F3 field did not even make it around on a formation lap behind the safety car without drivers spinning off.

Tim Tranmitz and Brando Badoer collided on the Kemmel Straight due to a lack of visibility, with James Hedley also spinning off in the torrential conditions.

After a brief weather period opened up, the race resumed behind the safety car at 0905 local time, but on this first lap, Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak spun off in his Campos, and becoming beached on a kerb.

This brought out another red flag, from which the race was not resumed, with no points or winner being declared.

Current forecasts are for this level of rain throughout the day, meaning the F1 race at 15:00 local time could be subject to long delays.
