Maximilian Günther converted pole position into victory to win the opening race of Formula E's Shanghai E-Prix, as Jean-Eric Vergne completed a shock DS Penske one-two.

Vergne pulled off a stunning overtake on both Dan Ticktum and Taylor Barnard in the final corners, to secure second ahead of the McLaren sensation.

A frustrated Ticktum had to settle for fourth after starting in 21st, whilst championship leader Oliver Rowland brought his Nissan home in fifth.

The Briton extended his lead in the drivers' title as a result, with him now sitting 86 points ahead of Barnard.

How the race unfolded

Maximilian Günther started from pole position with Taylor Barnard alongside him, whilst championship leader Oliver Rowland was in sixth.

As the lights went out, it was Pascal Wehrlein from third who led into the first corner after an incredible sweep around the outside; however, it was short-lived.

Positions changed non-stop at the Shanghai International Circuit throughout the opening stages, with the drivers having both pit boost and two attack modes to use.

It was disaster for Jaguar at the end of the second lap, as a late move by Jean-Eric Vergne in the final corner saw him make contact with Edoardo Mortara, who spun Nick Cassidy as a result.

Both Mortara and Cassidy pitted for repairs, promoting Mitch Evans into 20th following his 80-place grid penalty and 10-second stop-and-go.

It was a highly strategic race, which saw Andretti's Nico Müller kickstart a flurry of pit boost action. By lap 18, every driver had used their attack mode.

Günther found himself back in the lead, ahead of Wehrlein, Robin Frijns, Rowland and Lucas di Grassi. Rowland painted a frustrated picture when he pitted for pit boost, questioning Nissan's radio message that he faced "no threat".

It was Günther who held on to claim victory by several seconds, whilst a staggering battle took place in the final corners between Barnard, Jean-Eric Vergne and Dan Ticktum.

Vergne came out on top to secure a first-ever DS Penske one-two, ahead of Barnard and Ticktum. Rowland fell to fifth but extended his lead in the drivers' title.
