Lewis Hamilton has stated he endured the “worst experience” at the Spanish Grand Prix after struggling for speed throughout the race.

Hamilton matched his best starting grid position with Ferrari in fifth on Saturday and set his sights on achieving his first podium in red on Sunday.

However, the seven-time champion lacked pace in the opening phase of the race and was instructed by Ferrari to let team-mate Charles Leclerc through for position.

He continued to struggle as the race progressed but was offered a boost when a late safety car was deployed.

However, he only continued to fall backwards from there and was sensationally overtaken by Stake's Nico Hulkenberg after the restart.

When asked about why he was struggling so much, Hamilton was at a loss to explain.

“I have no idea why it was so bad,” the Ferrari driver told media including RacingNews365.

That was the worst experience balance-wise.”

Hamilton was then prompted to name positives he could take from the race, but conceded there was “zero”.

Hamilton's team-mate Charles Leclerc ended the race in third place as he bagged his third podium of the campaign.
