Nyck de Vries will start the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the back of the grid after crashing out of qualifying. The AlphaTauri driver was pushing on a flying lap when making an error under braking into Turn 3, hitting the barrier on the corner exit head-on to cause extensive damage to his AT04. De Vries' drama continues his run of failing to outqualify teammate Yuki Tsunoda this season and triggered a red flag period whilst his car and debris was cleared from the track.
Red flag delay
De Vries' crash caused an extensive delay with the front nose of his AlphaTauri piercing the barrier upon contact. The delay would have given Alpine and Haas the time to evaluate issues with their cars, with both Esteban Ocon and Kevin Magnussen reporting power issues on their in-laps. In the Dane's case, Haas is confident the suspected electrical connector issue is not serious enough to bring his session to an abrupt end. With 10 minutes left in the session, Max Verstappen headed Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso as the top three.
