Lando Norris has revealed that it is a case of "crash or don't pass" when battling Max Verstappen, creating a difficult test to overtake the Dutchman.
Norris started the Miami Grand Prix from second on the grid and tried to overtake pole sitter Verstappen at the second corner; however, he found himself off the circuit.
He lost multiple places as a result but managed to recover to second, behind team-mate Oscar Piastri who fought his way to the front to claim a fourth win of the season.
McLaren had a superior package at the Miami International Autodrome, although Norris would have preferred being ahead of his team-mate.
"Yeah, it's never the best feeling, but the team have done an amazing job, so I can't fault them at all," Norris said. "Good pit stops, great pace.
"Yeah, we were up the road, so it was a good feeling, but Oscar drove well, Max put up a good fight, as always, and I paid the price, but it's the way it is."
Norris had several altercations with Verstappen, not just in the opening corners. The Briton has serious difficulties trying to pass the Red Bull driver mid-race, with Verstappen having made his RB21 as wide as possible.
Overtaking Verstappen quickly was on Norris' agenda, although questions were quickly raised by pundits whether he should have not battled his rival on the first lap.
"What can I say?" questioned Norris. "If I don't go for it, people complain. If I go for it, people complain. So you can't win, but it's the way it is with Max.
"You know, it's crash or don't pass. Unless you get it really right and you put him in the perfect position, then you can just about get there.
"But I paid the price for not doing a good enough job today. But I'm so happy with second."
