One of the key driving forces behind the success of Red Bull in Formula 1, Christian Horner led the Austrian outfit as Team Principal from 2005-2025, overseeing eight drivers’ and six constructors’ championships victories. He was sacked as team principal and CEO on July 9th, 2025, replaced by Laurent Mekies.

Christian Horner as a racing driver

Born in the English town of Leamington Spa into a family steeped in the automotive industry, Horner first entered the motorsport world as a junior karter before moving onto cars with sponsorship to compete in Formula Renault in 1992, winning a race and placing as the highest rookie that season.

He then stepped up to race in the Formula 3000 series with his own team Arden, of which he would later become the manager after he opted to call time on his career in the driving seat.

Team principal of Red Bull Racing

Success with Arden in the form of three consecutive Formula 3000 titles between 2000 and 2002 caught the attention of Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz, and that attention would lead to an offer from Red Bull for Horner to lead the team in its first F1 season in 2005 as Team Principal.

Despite a middling seventh-placed finish in their first F1 campaign, Horner was instrumental in the recruitment of designer Adrian Newey to the team, a decision which led to steady gains to the point that by 2009, the team could claim its first victory at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai with a one-two finish.

That success set the stage for what would come next as Horner spearheaded Red Bull’s dominance of the sport for the next four seasons, with Sebastian Vettel taking four consecutive Drivers’ championships between 2010 and 2013 as the team dominated the Constructors’ championships.

Red Bull struggled following the introduction of turbo hybrid engines in 2014, with difficulties in the relationship with engine supplier Renault and reliability issues pushing the team further down the grid. The team welcomed a driver that would become F1’s youngest-ever race winner in Max Verstappen in 2016.

Red Bull wins again

Christian Horner was the Team Principal of the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team for 20 years until 2025, making him the longest-serving team principal in Formula 1 among current team principals. Horner has been highly successful, leading Red Bull to six Drivers' Championships and six Constructors' Championships in Formula 1. Both Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen have won four Drivers' Championships for Red Bull.

He was dismissed from his role days after the 2025 British Grand Prix, leaving his positions as team principal and CEO on Wednesday, July 9th. 

Christian Horner wife

Christian Horner married his wife Geri Horner, formerly Geri Halliwell, in 2015. She is mainly known for being part of the popular nineties group the Spice Girls. Ginger Spice left this group in 1998 and continued as a soloist. Observant Formula 1 viewers will also regularly see Geri on-screen during the various Grand Prix, where she is often present to support her husband.

Christian and Geri have a son together, Monty, who was born in 2017. Horner has another child, namely daughter Olivia from a previous relationship. She was born in 2013. Christian is also step-father to Geri's daughter Bluebell, whom she had in a previous relationship.
