South African-born Dieter Rencken first held full FIA Formula 1 media accreditation in 2000, since when he has attended over 350 grands prix and reported on categories such as WRC, WEC, MotoGP, WRX and Formula E. He qualified as engineer via Toyota SA and switched to motorsport journalism after holding various senior management positions in the wider motor industry.
Dieter, who rallied at national level in his 20s, joined RacingNews365 Group as special contributor in 2020, assuming the Editorial Director role in 2022. He is recognised as an authority on global motorsport politics and economics after unpicking F1’s previously opaque financial and governance structures in 2012 - bringing much-needed transparency to F1.
He has 'scooped' several of F1’s biggest news stories, including the Aston Martin/Red Bull Valkyrie project, Haas F1’s formation, Carlos Sainz Jnr's transfer to Toro Rosso, Fernando Alonso’s Daytona and Dakar entries, plus Lawrence Stroll’s acquisition of Force India (Racing Point) and his subsequent take-over of Aston Martin.
His latest reveals were the Red Bull RB17 hypercar and Oscar Piastri’s shock move to McLaren, including full details about the Contract Recognition Board hearing. He lives in the Ardennes region 30km from Spa-Francorchamps with his wife and two beagles, is fluent in English/German and speaks smatterings of Dutch and Zulu.
