Anthony Davidson contested a handful of F1 races with perennial backmarkers Minardi and Super Aguri while scoring no points. Despite this, he is well thought of on the Formula 1 grid serving as a test and reserve driver for BAR, Honda, and eventually Mercedes in the Brackley-based team’s various guises.

After a strong karting career where he won numerous titles in Britain, Italy and finishing second in the European championship, the Englishman would move into single-seater racing in 1999. Racing in the Formula Ford category, Davidson won numerous titles across classes before moving into Formula 3 where he would finish second in the British championship behind Takuma Sato.

Davidson would sign on as a reserve driver for the BAR team and get a fair amount of seat time in the team’s third car during practice sessions. Despite his pace, Davidson would never be able to get his big break and had to settle for a few uncompetitive drives for Minardi. He would make one appearance for BAR in 2005, filling in for Sato who was unwell, but his race would end after two laps when his engine failed at the Malaysian Grand Prix.

In 2007 Davidson would compete in his first full season in Formula 1 racing for the Super Aguri squad, though he would finish near the back scoring no points due to the car’s lack of pace. Super Aguri would eventually fold in 2008.

Davidson would go on to have a successful sportscar career winning the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship racing for Toyota. He would also go on to have a successful media career commentating for the likes of BBC and Sky Sports. The Englishman would also work with videogame developer Codemasters as an advisor and frequently appears as a commentator alongside David Croft for the latest iterations of the game.
