Mario Andretti has offered an insight into how Cadillac is seeking out its driver line-up for its inaugural season on the F1 grid.

After a lengthy process, an 11th team is set to join the field next year with General Motors (GM) spearheading the project.

The scheme was originally pushed by Mario's son Michael, who has since stepped away from involvement and allowed GM to take over the reins.

Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 champion, will sit on the board of directors at the squad, which is gearing up to an entry for the 2026 campaign when new technical regulations will come into play.

Various drivers have been linked to the project, including American Colton Herta who races for Andretti in IndyCar.

However, Mario Andretti has asserted that a driver with a history in F1 is the primary focus to aid its early years as a team.

“Ideally, it should be someone with experience,” he told Auto Motor und Sport

“We are taking our time and observing the market.”

Andretti not interested in advanced F1 role

Andretti Senior was heavily involved in Michael's bid to convince F1 to accept an 11th team and expand the grid for the first time since 2016.

Although he has a deep connection to the project, the 84-year-old asserted he is not interested in having day-to-day involvement once it gets up and running.

“To some extent, the project is also my baby,” he said.

“But I'm not looking for a permanent position or a job that ties me down every day. I never wanted to be a team owner. I am a racing driver.

“There were many offers after my career to join a team and I always said no.

“I just want to have a home base in the paddock where I can stay.”
