AlphaTauri Team Principal Franz Tost has confirmed Red Bull junior driver Isack Hadjar will make his free practice debut later this year.

Each Formula 1 team is bound by the sport’s regulations to hand two FP1 sessions to rookie drivers during the year - a rookie defined as a driver that has competed in no more than two Grands Prix.

As AlphaTauri began the season with Nyck de Vries before parting ways with him midway through the campaign, it has already fulfilled the regulation.

However, the team has decided to hand an F1 opportunity to Hadjar - who is currently competing in his rookie season in F2 with Hitech - in Abu Dhabi, Tost confirming the decision during the pre-Dutch Grand Prix FIA press conference.

The Frenchman is currently 15th in the F2 standings, taking one podium so far this year at the Sprint Race from the Red Bull Ring.

Hadjar joined the Red Bull Junior Team last season and was in contention for the FIA Formula 3 title before losing out in the final round at Monza.

Red Bull has a large pool of junior drivers, with Hadjar being one of five drivers competing in the current F2 campaign.

With the post-season test following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Yas Marina was a popular venue for teams to fulfil their rookie run obligations - with this year set to be no different.
