AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost is expecting a "successful" year ahead for the outfit, and has set out where he expects them to finish the season. The Red Bull sister squad had a strong campaign in 2021, having achieved P6 in the Constructors' Championship with 142 points to their name. More recently, they seemed to have a solid showing at pre-season testing in Barcelona. Pierre Gasly in particular completed an extensive amount of laps, despite going off track on the final day of the test .
Tost pleased with team performance in testing
Tost is happy with what the team achieved at the three-day test, and was particularly glad to see that they did not experience any reliability issues. "It's very difficult in this early stage to compare us with the other teams," Tost told media including RacingNews365.com . "Because the first two days were quite important to find out something about the new car, to learn this new car, to get the data together. "Fortunately, we [didn't] have any reliability issues, because that's quite important. But also the other teams, I must say, did a lot of mileage in the last two days."
Why AlphaTauri could have a "successful season"
Whilst it is still very early days in terms of predicting the 2022 pecking order, Tost feels confident that AlphaTauri can have a strong season ahead with their driver line-up of Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda. "It's too early to say where we are from the performance side," the Austrian explained. "Generally speaking, I expect a successful season from us. Why? Because the basis of the car is good. I am convinced that our engineers will go in the right direction for the development steps. "We have two very good drivers. Pierre Gasly, really now experienced and a race winner. Finishing on the podiums, he knows how to do it. "And Yuki is in his second season, which means he has now a lot more experience [than] last year, and I was really impressed by his first test day. "He was fast, [he made] no mistake[s], nothing and [he gave] very good feedback also from the technical side, and also the team improved." With all of this in mind, Tost has set AlphaTauri the goal of surpassing their result in 2021. "I expect that we will be better than last year, and that we will finish - as I always say - around fifth position in the Constructors' Championship," the team boss said. "Or better. It's not forbidden."
