Fernando Alonso believes it is 'motivating' to see Max Verstappen's current dominance over Formula 1. The Aston Martin driver has finished on the podium seven times, making him the most successful non-Red Bull driver in the 2023 campaign. He came close to taking victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, where he could have won if the team pitted to undercut Verstappen in the changing conditions. Alonso came close again at the Dutch GP, after the Spaniard revealed that he spent the late red flag period contemplating a move to take the lead in the nine-lap dash to the finish.
Alonso: Verstappen driving extra percentage
When asked if he finds it frustrating that Verstappen has become unbeatable, Alonso told media, including RacingNews365 : "No, it's motivation to get to that level. "In some weekends we are at that level, but in our window of performance like at Zandvoort, Monaco, or Canada, I think the team is just struggling [to get] the 100% out of the car with the perfect strategy, pit stops, starts. "I feel connected to the car as well, so I'm driving that extra percentage. I think Max is doing that more often. He's always doing that every weekend and it's what we need to achieve in the future."
