Alonso jokes about 40th birthday: I feel 25!

Fernando Alonso will turn 40 ahead of the next race on the 2021 F1 calendar in Hungary, but the Spaniard admits he is not feeling his age after making a comeback to Formula 1.

Fernando Alonso admits he is not worried about turning 40 ahead of the next race weekend, though has jokingly suggested some measures he might take to look younger. The Spaniard celebrates his birthday on 29 July, which falls on media day of the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix. It sounds like we might see a slightly different-looking Alonso for the occasion... "I will go in the solarium, I will be tanned, I will shave, and I will look very young," Alonso joked to RacingNews365.com and other select media. "No, I mean, it's going to be a very normal race. No change for me." Alonso made his return to Formula 1 with Alpine this season following two years away from the sport, but faced some concerns about his fitness in the pre-season following a cycling accident which left him with a fractured jaw. The 39-year-old underwent surgery for the injury, and has previously said that he will require a further procedure at the end of the season to remove two titanium plates. Fortunately Alonso has been feeling fit and well as the season has progressed. "I feel good," the two-times World Champion said. "Honestly, after the accident at the beginning of the year, in the first couple of races, still a part of the stress of coming back to the sport. "I was concerned about the jaw, about the shoulder as well [where] I had a small injury. But now, I'm super, super fit and I'm 200 percent. "Next week is another number, so I will eat some cake, but apart from that it's going to be a very normal weekend. As I said, I feel 25, so whatever number it says [on] the passport is not what I feel. "I am looking forward to the birthday celebrations. I think the team have a few things planned too. It’s quite nice to be celebrating a birthday at a Formula 1 weekend so I can’t complain. We will be sure to have some cake and celebrate a little bit, but we have an important weekend ahead, so I’ll be fully focused on racing. It’s our last race before the summer shutdown and I am looking to continue our good form in Budapest." After some struggles during the early races of the season, Alonso has been on a strong run of performances recently. The Spaniard was one of the stars of the first Sprint Qualifying at Silverstone, and has scored points in the last five Grand Prix.
