Alonso in dark over mystery Canadian Grand Prix problem

Despite finishing second, Fernando Alonso was told to lift and coast in the closing stages, allowing Lewis Hamilton to close up.

Fernando Alonso says he was kept in the dark about a potential late problem on his Aston Martin in the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. After being beaten off the line by Lewis Hamilton, Alonso scythed past on Lap 22 and pulled away, but in the final stint, Hamilton began to close back up on the AMR23 - which was told to lift and coast to manage a problem. Alonso was able to hold off Hamilton for a sixth podium from eight races with Hamilton third behind race-winner Max Verstappen, but revealed the team did not tell him what the problem with the car was.

"They didn't tell me so maybe it was not to make me worried," Alonso explained. "The car was okay, I was just following the instructions so yeah hopefully it means we had a bit more pace [in hand] so at the next race [in Austria] we can put a bit more pressure on Max. "We were hoping to challenge Red Bull a bit more, we lost a place at the start with Lewis, it was a battle with the Mercedes and we were pushing all the race. "I didn't have one lap where I can relax, so it was an amazing battle. "At the beginning I had the pace and the end I think Lewis had a bit more pace and it was tough, very demanding, almost 70 laps like Qualifying."
