Alonso explains why he thinks Verstappen is the best driver on the grid

Two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso believes Red Bull's Max Verstappen is the best driver on the current grid.

Spanish Formula 1 star Fernando Alonso thinks Max Verstappen is the best driver on the current grid with the Alpine driver citing the Dutchman's willingness to overtake as one of the key factors in his statement. Alonso who won back to back world titles in 2005 and 2006 has raced against a wealth of opponents including the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Jenson Button. Despite the caliber of opponents Alonso has faced, the Spaniard believes Verstappen is the best driver on the current grid. "For me, Max Verstappen is currently the best," Alonso told F1-Insider. "He's a driver that I love to see, he's always in attack mode. If he's third and catching up on second, then you know he's not going to stay there. You know that he'll try it at some point. Of course, this extreme driving style sometimes provokes mistakes but that's exciting for the fans." The former McLaren man did also state that each season could have a diferring outcome on determining how a driver performs. "In Formula 1, it changes from year to year and from car to car," Alonso explained. "There are drivers who are very fast on a lap, others at the start. Others are constant and still others are very aggressive." With Verstappen still only 23 the Dutchman has a bright future ahead of him. That being said, the Red Bull star has been slightly unfortunately given that his ascent has coincided with Hamilton and Mercedes' current stranglehold of the sport.
