Alex Albon defends Williams over 'angry' tactic after Monaco GP farce

Alex Albon has defended Williams' tactics during the farcical Monaco Grand Prix, pointing out that it picked up three more points. During the mandatory two-stop race, both Albon and Carlos Sainz were initially caught up behind Liam Lawson's RB, who was driving slowly to allow team-mate Isack Hadjar to complete his stops and emerge in the points.  After Hadjar was done, Williams then deployed the same tactics with Sainz backing the field up to allow Albon to complete his two pit stops. In the end, Albon was ninth and Sainz 10th for Williams' fifth double points finish of the season, including in the last four consecutive races. It is the first time since the opening five races of the 2016 season that the team has achieved at least four consecutive double points finishes. Reflecting, Albon felt the ends justified the means. "This is not how we want to go racing. I know we put on a bad show for everyone, and I know we made a few drivers angry behind us in the process." Albon told Sky Sports F1.  "It was just taking advantage of the track, the size of the cars, and that is it. It was the two-stop which made us do it." Later, addressing media including RacingNews365, the Thai explained how the race effectively became a peloton.  "It wasn't how we were going to go racing, but once RB started it, it put us into a position where we had to, and the only way to get out of that situation is to do what they did," he said.  "In the end, it is a team sport and we maximised those three points for the team.  "If you gave us a one-stop, we'd do one-stop racing for this style of racing. We'd do it on a two-stop, we'd do it on a three-stop, and we'd do it on a four-stop. "I think it was worth a try, but even if it was as bad as it was, it was a talking point and it became more of a peloton than a race."
