Albon hopeful Vowles' Mercedes experience can benefit Williams

With James Vowles joining Williams as the squad's new Team Principal for 2023, Alex Albon feels positive about the insight that Vowles can bring following his many years at Mercedes.

Alex Albon is hopeful that James Vowles' extensive experience at Mercedes can prove beneficial to Williams. Vowles departs his position as Motorsport Strategy Director at the Silver Arrows to become Williams' new Team Principal after working for the Brackley-based squad for 21 years, including during their previous guises as British American Racing, Honda and Brawn GP. With Vowles not having started in his new position at Williams yet, Albon admits that it is difficult for him to give his first impressions, but the British-Thai driver is impressed by what Vowles has achieved in the sport so far. "He's been at Mercedes for over 20 years now. Surprisingly, because he looks quite young!" Albon told media, including RacingNews365.com , at the launch of Williams' 2023 livery. "He's clearly got a lot of experience."

Albon welcomes Vowles' 'great insight'

Williams have faced a difficult few years, with the team ending the 2022 F1 season at the bottom of the Constructors' Championship. As such, Albon thinks that Vowles' insight – after working with a winning outfit for many years – will be valuable to the Grove-based team. "[Vowles has] experience with success and being in an environment and a team that won multiple World Championships," Albon explained. "He was very involved in Mercedes. It's great to have that knowledge and information that he has, obviously for us especially, where we've had a few tough years. It gives a great insight to just what it takes. "I feel like, because of his experience and because of his success, it just motivates all of us to listen to him and to understand why Mercedes do certain things and the reasons for it, because we want to have that winning mentality. "We want to win races eventually, so it's great to have him on board."
