Run for the first time in 1923, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the world’s oldest active race. The beauty of Le Mans is that unlike other events, which test the overall speed of a car and driver, endurance and speed are tested in equal measure.

The format of the race is straightforward, as the car that completes the most number of laps wins the race. Held at the iconic Circuit de la Sarthe, the track is renowned for its long Mulsanne Straight, which has been modified in recent years. The track is approximately 13.6km long and is one of the oldest in Europe.

The race features several classes running on the same weekend. The premiere LMP1 (Le Mans Prototype) class has seen the likes of Audi, Toyota, and Porsche vie for top honours, with the latter one of the most successful marques in the race’s history with 19 overall wins. 

Other classes include the LMP2 class and the famous GTE class which sees brands like Ferrari, Ford, Aston Martin and several other outfits race modified versions of their respective sports cars.

The event also forms one-third of the coveted triple crown, an honour that is bestowed on a driver that wins the 24 Hours of Le Mans along with the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix. Only one driver has won all three races in the history of motorsport, Graham Hill, with Fernando Alonso and Juan Pablo Montoya being the only active drivers who have won two out of the three events. 

Recent years have seen the Toyota Gazoo Racing team dominate the event, with 2020 being no different. This is largely due to the fact they are the only proper factory team still competing in the LMP1 class after Porsche pulled out at the end of the 2017 event. 

Danish driver Tom Kristensen remains the most successful driver at Le Mans with nine wins, while the likes of Fernando Alonso, Brendon Hartley, Andre Lotterer and Nico Hulkenberg have all competed in both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Formula 1 in the last decade. 

The 2021 race is scheduled for June 12 and 13 and will mark the 89th running of the race.
