Jake Dennis secured his first pole position since Jakarta last year, in Formula E's first Sanya E-Prix since 2019.
It was a shock all-Andretti final, but a mistake by Felipe Drugovich saw the Season 9 world champion claim pole with ease.
Championship leader Mitch Evans and Cupra Kiro's Dan Ticktum secured third and fourth on the grid, with DS Penske's Taylor Barnard qualifying in fifth.
There were big shocks in the group stage of qualifying, as key title contenders Edoardo Mortara and Oliver Rowland both suffered eliminations and failed to progress to the duels.
*Barnard has a 10-place grid penalty, Pepe Martí a five-place grid penalty, Maximilian Günther a three-place grid penalty and Lucas di Grassi a 40-place grid penalty.
