George Russell became the first driver to dip into the 1m 33s to top the morning session on the final day of the first of two tests in Bahrain.
The Mercedes driver set a 1m 33.918 to go almost three-tenths clear of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who had a positive morning after firing a series of complaints on Wednesday.
Max Verstappen is another driver to have made serious complaints about the new power unit regulations, but went third quickest on Friday morning.
Haas' Oliver Bearman and Oscar Piastri completed the top five, with all 11 teams having completed some running.
