John Bennett stormed to his first F2 victory in the sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix, taking the chequered flag after a last-lap overtake on Sebastian Montoya, who was also fighting for his first win.
VAR driver Rafael Villagomez rounded out the rostrum at the Red Bull Ring to secure his points of the season, ahead of championship contenders Alex Dunne, Gabriele Mini and Rafael Camara.
Nikola Tsolov lost ground in that fight, unable to score points and having to settle for ninth on the road, the first of the unrewarded places.
A crash at Turn 3 on the opening lap triggered an early safety car, with Emerson Fittipaldi Jr., Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak and Oliver Goethe all consigned to retirement.
Joshua Dürksen's afternoon also came to a premature end, before Colton Herta's ailing Hitech machine caused a virtual safety car period.
Ritomo Miyata, in the team's other car, was handed a five-second time penalty for an infringement under the VSC.
UPDATE: Camara was later handed a five-second time penalty for causing the shunt at Turn 3 on the first lap, after it was determined he could have braked earlier to avoid making contact with Inthraphuvasak, which triggered the sequence of events.
Usually, such an incident would come with a 10-second time penalty, but the stewards mitigated it down because "the incident happened on the first lap while there was a large group of cars competing for space, which created a concertina effect," according to the official decision document.
Therefore, Camara was dropped to ninth place, elevating Tsolov to the final points-paying position.
But as the Invicta driver remained inside the top 10, he retained his point for the fastest lap.
Nonetheless, it drops Camara to fourth in the drivers' standings, behind Dunne.
