Alonso made his debut in Melbourne at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix, driving for Minardi alongside Tarso Marques.
He was joined by Kimi Raikkonen, Juan Pablo Montoya and Enrique Bernoldi as rookies on the grid, qualifying 19th.
He would take 12th in the race, which was overshadowed by the death of marshal Graham Beveridge after an incident at Turn 3.
