Verstappen brushes off cost cap penalty concerns

Red Bull are set to have reduced development time in the 2023 F1 season after breaching the cost cap.

Max Verstappen says he is not concerned about the impact of Red Bull's Formula 1 cost cap penalty, but admits the team will need to be cautious about development time. After all 10 teams submitted their accounts for the 2021 season, it was revealed in autumn 2022 that Red Bull were the only squad to have gone over the $145 million limit imposed. As RacingNews365.com revealed , this was in four main areas including sick pay, spare parts and a tax credit problem with United Kingdom authorities. This initially put the team about $1.8 million over the limit, but after the FIA sought clarity on the tax credit situation and accepted this, the total overspend was about $400,000. As penalty, Red Bull received a $7 million fine and deduction in their wind-tunnel and CFD development time for the 2023 season. Despite the impact of these penalties, double World Champion Verstappen is not overly concerned.

Verstappen not concerned by penalty

"Of course I've thought about it," Verstappen replied when asked by RacingNews365.com about the potential impact of the penalty after Red Bull announced an engine deal with Ford for 2026. "But I think we have a lot of very competent people in our factory, it makes things a little bit harder, but I also look at it like this: I prefer to be in the position that we are in, [rather] than always finishing second or third in the championship. That is way more depressing. "We have a lot of good people, and I am sure we have to be a little bit more precise in what we are doing in the wind-tunnel. "But I don't expect it to be a big, limiting factor in if we are going to win the title or not."
