Schumacher: 2022 car differences aren't 'night and day' compared to last year

Haas' Mick Schumacher believes the key to success in 2022 will be being one of the drivers to understand the new cars as quickly as possible.

Mick Schumacher has downplayed the impact of Formula 1's new regulations, saying that the 2022 cars largely feel similar to last season's. Entering his sophomore season in the sport as he continues with Haas, Schumacher is hoping for a much stronger year after his team sacrificed 2021 in order to concentrate on development for the new rules. Having got his first laps in during testing in Barcelona, in what was a compromised test for Haas as they encountered numerous mechanical issues, Schumacher offered his initial thoughts on the handling of the new car. "I wouldn't call it night and day," Schumacher told media, including RacingNews365.com , when asked about how different the cars are handling. "We still go in circles and quick! I think, overall, without going too much into detail, we have to readapt."

Schumacher noticing the extra weight from behind the wheel

Schumacher explained that the driver who can understand the new cars the quickest will likely have a sizeable advantage to start the year, particularly as new problems present themselves in light of the revolutionary regulations. "We have to analyse things differently and probably approach things differently," he said. "There will be different concerns compared to last year, and it's just about a matter of being one of the quicker drivers to analyse them and understand them so that you, at the end, have the tools you need to survive the race the right way." The German driver also commented on the weight of the cars, saying the increased weight brought on by the bigger wheels and increased safety measures have resulted in a noticeable change behind the wheel. "I think that the main thing is the weight," he went on to comment. "Obviously, that plays a role in nearly every corner – mostly low-speed corners, though. But, overall, I do enjoy driving these cars. I think the initial thought is positive."
